Sara Win Williams, former Director of Global Policy at Facebook, delivered explosive testimony before the U.S. Congress that has sent shockwaves through the tech world. Backed by damning documents, her words expose how one of the planet’s most powerful companies systematically lied to Americans, colluded with China’s authoritarian regime, and profited from the vulnerability of teenagers. This is a story of betrayed values, greed, and a relentless fight for truth that Facebook tried to silence at all costs.
Williams, who worked closely with Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, revealed how Facebook knowingly collaborated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Despite Zuckerberg’s public claims of championing free speech, the company developed censorship tools to appease Beijing. One chilling example: Facebook deleted the account of a Chinese dissident living in the U.S. at the CCP’s demand. Not only did they comply, but they lied to Congress, claiming it was a “standard procedure.”
Documents presented by Williams confirm that Facebook negotiated with Chinese officials, agreeing to share user data—including that of Americans. The company built data centers in China, ignoring warnings from its own engineers about the risk of espionage by the Chinese government. The goal? Access to a market worth $18.3 billion. Williams quoted internal documents where Facebook openly stated its aim to “help China expand its global influence.”
Even more shocking is that Facebook shared artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with China. Briefings for the CCP, conducted since 2015, helped Beijing develop its own AI models, including DeepSeek, which is partially based on Facebook’s Llama model. Zuckerberg, who publicly wraps himself in the American flag, effectively fueled the technological rise of the U.S.’s primary geopolitical rival.
Williams’ testimony also exposed how Facebook preyed on the emotional vulnerabilities of American teens. The company tracked the behavior of 13- to 17-year-olds, pinpointing moments when they felt “worthless” or like “losers.” For instance, if a girl deleted a selfie, Facebook’s algorithms flagged it as a prime opportunity to push ads for cosmetics or weight-loss products. This data was sold to advertisers who profited from teens’ psychological distress.
Williams noted that Facebook’s leadership was fully aware of the harm their platforms caused but chose to ignore it. Strikingly, many executives banned their own children from using Instagram or Facebook, knowing how toxic these products were. One manager callously remarked, “Teens aged 13–17 are our most valuable demographic. Advertisers want them, and we should be shouting it from the rooftops.”
Facebook went to extreme lengths to silence Williams. The company sued her, demanding a $50,000 fine for every public mention of Facebook—even if her statements were true. They barred her from speaking to Congress, threatening financial ruin and reputational destruction. Williams received a court-ordered gag notice, delivered to her home as she fed her baby. These intimidation tactics only underscore how desperately Facebook fears the truth.
Despite the pressure, Williams testified before Congress, risking everything. Her courage has been compared to whistleblowers who took on the tobacco industry, changing history. Senators like Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin called for holding Zuckerberg accountable, demanding he testify under oath.
Williams’ testimony is not just a scandal—it’s a call to action. Facebook, now rebranded as Meta, continues to evade accountability, spending millions to lobby against laws protecting children and regulating tech monopolies. Senators are pushing to repeal Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields companies like Meta from lawsuits. This could force them to answer for the harm they’ve caused.
Williams concluded her testimony with a plea to Congress: “You have the power to hold Meta accountable.” Her words are not just an accusation but a spark of hope that truth can prevail. Americans deserve to know how their data, security, and children have been traded for profit. It’s time for Mark Zuckerberg to stop hiding behind lawyers and his “patriot” mask. It’s time to tell the truth.
